For the past 20 years, Newcastle High School has brought the sounds of music to the Newcastle community. It’s annual choir festival, a popular two-day event on the town’s social calendar.
Inviting school choirs from Northern KwaZulu-Natal, Newcastle High ensures music lovers are enthralled. This year’s festival speaks volumes of the effort put in by participating choirs.
Taking place at the Farmer’s Hall, primary school choirs began the event’s proceedings on a high note on Tuesday, August 28. With the High schools performing the following night in true magnificent fashion.
A staggering 10 primary schools and 7 high schools, which includes the NKZN Youth Choir, performed at this year’s festival. Their melodic voices captivating the audience.
These young musicians showcasing the reams of effort put in over the months building up to the event.

While creating a musical escape for the Newcastle community, the focus of the choir festival is for the choirs themselves. At choir competitions, choirs don’t have the opportunity to hear what other school choirs sound like. Through Newcastle High’s Choir Festival, schools from NKZN can enjoy performances from other schools, while learning from them, and showcasing their own musical talent.
The festival ended with all the high school choirs uniting for one song, a true magical, music moment.

With a two-day event focusing solely on music, the Newcastle High School Choir Festival is truly a musical extravaganza. Powerful voices, committed and trained young contenders, all pushing themselves, to bring to life true vocal talent.

Well done to all who participated, we wish each and every choir group a mountain of success in the future and we look forward to hearing you raise the roof at next years event.
