A sense of excitement filled the Paradise Sports Ground on Saturday, August 11. Spectators amped for a day of cricket. The players geared up for a day of laughter and fun.
The KFC Mini Cricket Festival is more than a mere day dedicated to cricket. It is an event which highlights the importance of sports in children’s lives, as it introduces them to the joys of cricket.

The event was officially opened by Jason Sathiaseelan, Crickets Service Manager of KZN Inlands Cricket Association. “Mini cricket plays a big role in cricket development, as this is where it all begins.”
He explains one just needs to look at cricket teams such as the Dolphins or Proteas, where a bulk of the players developed a passion for cricket through mini cricket.

Through a passion for cricket beginning at the foundation levels, Sathiaseelan emphasised the importance of parents supporting children throughout their school careers.
Dolphins player, Athi Maposa, believes Sathiaseelan is right, as his career in cricket all began through mini cricket. “It is important for parents to encourage children to play outside, to take part in sports. Cricket took me through school. It is events such as this, which helped me start.”

Following the KFC Mini Cricket Festival, Newcastle Presidents took on Varsity College in an action-packed game. Varsity College made 104 runs, all out in the 20th over. Newcastle Presidents XI, unfortunately, made 94 runs in the 20th over, losing by 10 runs.
A great day and event, filled with action packed cricket, was enjoyed by all. It is always good seeing SA Cricket Stars get involved with schools, all with the goal in mind of furthering the sport.
