A good teacher does more than teach learners from a structured curriculum. A truly good teacher strives to inspire his or her learners, seeing them develop a passion for learning and succeed in life.
For Mervyn Wood, Acting Principal of Chelmsford Combined School, teaching is also about interacting with the children. Through his leadership role, Wood is able to see teachers forge a bond of understanding with their learners, instilling a desire to flourish and reach for the stars.

Where did you study and what are your fondest memories?
“I studied at the Bechet College of Education. My fondest memories are the student life and sports,” Wood explains.
Going through the ranks of being a teacher to becoming acting principle, what was your greatest motivation?
“The learners have always been my biggest motivation. I am very keen on the children and interacting with them. There is no bigger reward than having old learners stopping me in town, seeing how successful they are after their tertiary education. As a teacher, I want to see learners achieve their dreams in life.”

Who in your career has inspired you the most?
“The school’s previous principle, Mr Ryland, and the former ward manager, Mr P.A.M, Mdlala. The way they led, they were true gentlemen and professionals.”
What positive views do you have on educators?
“The dedication they show learners, going out of their way to ensure the learners’ wellbeing. Then there are the extra hours they put in. Educators do a lot of good, especially under the difficult circumstances they face at times.”

What is your message to the community as acting principle?
“I would like to encourage parents to take more control of their children’s lives and discipline. I would also like to see parents get more involved with the life of the school, as it can’t operate in isolation.”
