The Liberty Group is on high alert, following a cyber-attack on Liberty Life on Thursday, June 14.
According to reports, the hackers notified the company to vulnerabilities before attempting to blackmail the business out of millions of rands. What makes the hack security breach scary, is that the hackers allegedly obtained sensitive information about its top clients.
The money requested by the alleged perpetrators was to keep the information they had obtained from public view.
The life insurance company notified its clientele on Saturday, June 16, about it falling victim to the criminal act. A notification which saw people showing a great deal of concern. In response to its clientele’s immense concerns, Liberty Life put a notice on its website. The notice informed people that it is currently following the relevant steps to resolve the problem.

“Our team of dedicated IT specialists and security personnel have devoted all their efforts around the clock to ensure that we live up to duty of care to protect our customers and their details. We immediately identified and addressed specific vulnerabilities the Liberty Life IT infrastructure may have had, ensuring the integrity of our customer data. We can confirm that we are in full control of our IT environment. To our customers, we totally understand the concerns they might have about the impact of this act of criminality.”
Munro explains thus far, it seems email and possibly attachments have fallen victim to the data breach.
At this stage there is no evidence that any customers have suffered any financial losses. Liberty staff will proactively inform any customers individually if and when it is discovered that they may have been impacted. No further action is required from customers at this stage.
The life insurance company has also taken to social media platform, Facebook, to assure its customers that they have regained control of their infrastructure.
