Over 32 years ago, Charles Hawthorne and Trevor Douthwaite decided to take a chance and open a new business in town. Never imagining their business would become an integral part of the Newcastle community.
On March 1, 1986, the two business partners opened Construction & Cutting Machines. While everyone knows the name, what many don’t realise, is when it first opened in Kirkland Street, it was so small that it had a staff compliment of six people.
But, through the determination of the team and their quality service, Construction & Cutting Machines grew at an exponential rate. Moving to its current premises on Ayliff Street, where it boasts an on-site parking bay and a larger showroom, the business flourished even further.

It is now one of the leading garden businesses in KwaZulu-Natal.
No longer does Construction & Cutting Machines focus solely on lawnmowers. It now has a wide selection of merchandise. In fact, the diversity of the store’s products has seen the business becoming a one-stop garden shop.
Construction and Cutting Machines sports domestic and industrial tools which ranges from fire-fighting equipment, chain saws, brush cutters, power tools to pool chemicals, among an array of many items you need to maintain your garden. One does also not need to fret about the products becoming obsolete. “We back up the equipment which we sell,” emphasised Trevor.
But how does Construction & Cutting Machines back up their products?
Simple. Whatever, they sell they are willing to service, which means customers never need to fear that there are no spares.
Furthermore, Trevor explains the store’s prices are extremely competitive. “Our spare prices for example are competitive in that we match and better the local franchise store prices.”

With a staff compliment of 14 people, each one is ready to assist the community’s outdoor needs. Each staff member holding decades of experience. We salute the experience and diversity of this amazing business and encourage the community to visit Construction and Cutting Machines for your next garden purchase.
