Italian playwright, Luigi Pirandello, once said that anyone could be heroic from time to time. But being a gentleman was something one needed to work on all the time.
No truer words have been spoken. To be a gentleman in modern day society reflects a sense of respect, education and good upbringing.
On Wednesday, May 17, St Dominics Newcastle launched its Formal Dinner Club. St Dominics Newcastle Executive Head, Bryn Thomas, explained the idea of the dinner club was to equip matriculants with the necessary knowledge on how to behave in a formal setting.

“The idea is to continue the education of the matric boys, regarding them being gentlemen in society. We want to teach them how to function in a formal environment and how to act.”
This entails teaching the learners on the correct etiquette at a formal dinner and other events. With May 17 being the first of such events, the matric boys will be meeting once a month. Learning from which cutlery to use, how to RSVP, how to interact with other guests and how to greet the host, the first Formal Dinner Club meeting left the learners with a firm grasp on what is expected of them in the outside world.
The first regular step in becoming a gentleman left the learners better prepared for their journey to making a positive impact in society.
