For the past five years, Aja Nachale Newcastle Dance Academy has offered youngsters the opportunity to embrace an environment focused on growth and development.

“I started the dance school to promote and uplift art and culture in town. I also wanted to give children the chance to get off the streets and stay away from drugs,” explains Nikole Naidoo, the owner of the dance academy.

With classes taking place at the Suryaville War Room, twice a week, the dance classes offer Newcastle youth a new perspective on life.

“The dance school allows the children to use their spare time to learn about different cultures, as we don’t only do Indian dancing,” Nikole says. Dance students are also taught Hip Hop, R&B, Break Dancing and even Zulu dancing.

Exposing the children to an array of cultures through dance, the youngsters are taught other life lessons during their classes. “Dancing improves concentration, keeps you fit and improves your self-esteem.”

While the Aja Nachale Newcastle Dance Academy imparts youngsters with the necessary skills to dance. It also ensures the children get exposure to showcase their skills. “We take part in about two shows every month. We also have the Winter Festival where our dancers performed.”

However, despite the performances and the life lessons it offers youth, Nikole says the school does need the community’s support. “We would like to invite the community to take part in our projects. We also encourage children from all walks of life to join us, this is not just for Indian children. It is for the entire community,” Nikole enthused.

Offering children, the opportunity to forge new friendships, stay fit and boost their self-esteem and self-discipline, dancing is the way to go.
