What does it mean to be a real man, we asked locals?

Article Powered By:

What does it take to be a real man? Action movies will lead you to believe that real men always have rippling muscles, a skirt simmering smile and insanely awesome hair . They can fight 30 men without breaking a sweat and are capable of extraordinary feats like racing, shooting or fighting, without any prior experience.

But, as women search for their knight in shining armour, what really makes a man? Do action movies really have truth in them? Are men really expected to save the world from villainous fiends before supper time and still have the time to go to work, tend to parents evenings and rock date night like a boss?

The Newcastillian asked community members what they thought a real man is. This is what they have to say:

Poloso Moloi

“A real man does not allow pride to cloud his vision. If something is wrong, it is wrong. He ensures he fixes wrongs, accepts his responsibilities and looks after his children.”

Shevlin Balgobind

“A real man would be a guy who secures his life, his woman’s life and supports his parents in their old age. A real man might not be perfect, but he always strives to do good.”

“A real man is independent. He is a man that knows about responsibility. A real man is honest and always truthful.”

Describing a man that strives to lead a family orientated life, doing good in his every day life, being a real man does not end here. To truly be a real man, you must follow a guideline that will separate you from the boys.

  1. Never cancel plans with a woman via text. Only boys rely on text messages.
  2. Appreciate your parents. They have moulded you and help shape you into the person you are. Despite their flaws, you could have been living on the streets without their support.
  3. Whether angry, excited or in mourning, never make a scene. Making a scene means you have lost a certain degree of self-control. Only boys lose control over their emotions and circumstances.
  4. Own a black suit, a white formal shirt, a good pair of formal black shoes and a tie. You might not always need it, but nothing compares to a man arriving to a formal event, looking dapper.
  5. Don’t stare. It is rude and just plain weird. If someone catches your eye, either talk to them or move on. But never stare.
  6. If you offer someone help, don’t stop until the job is done.

  7. If you don’t understand something, ask someone who does. People admire a guy who is willing to learn.
  8. Never date a friend’s ex-girlfriend. Loyalties to friends reflects a lot about a man’s character.
  9. Always wear a watch and ensure you are punctual. Being tardy is selfish. Someone’s time is valuable.
  10. Always carry a hanky. Also, ensure it is always clean. Why? It can either be used to wipe the sweat from your brow on a hot day, or if you see a woman crying, it can be offered to dry up her tears. A gentleman is always in style.
  11. Leave your cellphone in your pocket. Life is short, enjoy the small moments with your family, friends and other loved ones.
  12. Date a woman outside your usual social circle. Valuable life lessons can be learned, and you might be surprised on where love can be found.
  13. Someone offend you? So, what?! No one really cares if you are offended. Move on and learn from the situation.
  14. When shaking hands, make sure its firm and you make eye contact. No one likes shaking a limp fish.
  15. Finally, be confident. If you feel a bit insecure, fake it. Confidence and sheer nerve can get you far.
