In the world of mathematics and science, equations reign supreme in the quest for knowledge.
Solving the questions of the universe, mathematics and science is often viewed as the territory of extra-ordinary minds. Solely the domain of great minds such as Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking, who spent their days breaking away the barriers of ignorance. However, this is not the case. Math and science is there for everyone who yearns to broaden their knowledge.
For those who are intrigued by the mysteries of mathematics and science, but find it confusing, there is hope. Situated at Newcastle Corner, Master Maths offers Newcastillians the opportunity to conquer any issues they have in the two subjects.
“Classrooms are so big these days, that children are not always getting the individual attention that they need,” explains Marici Hendrikse, owner of Master Maths. With the learning institute offering learners individual attention, math and science are no longer the looming dragons which school children fear facing.
“We assist school learners all the way to Grade 12. We assess them, see where their problems lay, and give them individual attention.”
But is this the only importance of taking up extra tuition?
With the pass rate for subjects such as mathematics being dropped to 30 percent, the importance of extra tuition has become imperative. “A 30 percent pass rate creates a weak foundation in mathematics and science, but the tuition can help the learner strengthen it,” Hendriks says.
Why is developing your mathematics skills so important in everyday life?
“Everything consists of maths. You can’t even buy anything from the stores without basic math. Also, math is not just about one plus one equals two,” Hendriks explained.
She believes that through a greater understanding of mathematics, one’s way of logical thinking was greatly improved. This in turn assists people in evaluating problems in life and coming up with a logical solution.
“With fewer people taking maths as a subject these days, by choosing it, you become a part of an elite group.”
How so? Because through mathematics, you stand a better chance of improving your way of life. “You are very limited with what you can do without maths. For those who want to drop out of high school and get a trade, you need maths to do your trade test,” Hendrikse emphasised.
The importance of science can also not be ignored. “Science is so interesting. Science is research, it is medicine and moving forward in life. It is the reason we found out about listeriosis, global warming and understanding what goes on the world.”
While dedicated to assisting school learners, adults can also find help at Master Maths. “We offer single subject enrolment classes.”
This allows adults who never did match or science at school, to come and acquire the necessary knowledge.
“We are registered with the Independent Examination Board (IEB). This means that adults who are doing home schooling or going for their trade tests can come to us. The oldest person I have helped was in their fifties,” Hendrikse said.
