St Dominics Newcastle’s achievers shine at Awards Ceremony.

Reaching one’s full potential takes hard work, discipline and determination. For several St Dominics Newcastle learners, these three qualities play an instrumental role in their lives.

As they pursue their passion, their efforts are not going unnoticed. On Thursday, March 8, St Dominics Newcastle hosted its Awards Ceremony.

The Blood Peer Promoters 2017: Asande Vilane, Vuyiswa Mkhize, Aqueelah Kader, Matthew Wu, Sohail Adam and Sahil Samlal each received a certificate of merit for their service.

Over the past year, these learners have diligently raised awareness at school, educating their peers about the importance of donating blood. At blood camps held at St Dominics Newcastle, these learners also helped set up and assisted the South African National Blood Services (SANBS) during the clinics.

The school’s sports captains each received their badges. Congratulations to the following pupils:

  • Abigail Peters – Swimming Captain
  • Aqueelah Kader – Girls Hockey Captain
  • Matthew Wu – Boys Hockey Captain

Four of St Dominics Newcastle learners have made a splash in the sporting world. Their efforts bringing about a great deal of school pride.

The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee required Paula van Zyl to participate in the Kenyan Open and Para Swimming Championships, so she could be internationally classified.

Not only did Paula receive her international classification, but she also won four gold medals plus one silver medal. At the awards ceremony, she received an Honour’s certificate for her swimming accolades.

Lianka Grobler is also making a name for herself in the swimming world. She recently placed third in the Chelmsford Challenge.

Following this, Lianka qualified to represent KZN at SA Open Water Championships, held in Sun City.

Lianka placed third in her age group during the 5km swim and 11th overall in her group. Through her swimming, she received her Honours Certificate at the Awards Ceremony.

Abigail Peters took part in the KZN Gala. She secured first place in the 400-metre freestyle and second place in the 200-metre freestyle. Abigail also swam the Midmar Mile in 24 minutes. At the Chelmsford Challenge, Abigail clinched the first-place title in both the one kilometre and three-kilometre division.

Abigail competed in the KZN Open Water Championships, were she took the title of 2nd woman in the 10km division and 3rd place in the 5km division. As an avid swimmer, Abigail also participated in the SA Open Water Championships. 

At the event, she participated in the three-kilometre and five-kilometre categories, as well as KZN Relay Team.

Qualifying for Honours and already sporting an Honours Blazer, Abigail received an Honours certificate at the Awards Assembly.

Abigail will be competing in the Level 3 Swimming Championships later this year. May she continue making waves in the swimming world.

Grade 10 learner, Minette Janse van Vuuren received her Honours Blazer during the Awards Ceremony. Receiving a standing ovation from her peers, Minette is well on her way to achieving greatness in swimming.

She placed first in both the 50 metres and 100 metre freestyle divisions, during the KZN Open Gala. She has also been selected to participate in the following events:

  • School Championships,
  • Junior Nationals from March 21 to March 25 in Durban.
  • Senior Nationals from April 23 to April 28 in Port Elizabeth
  • Short Course Nations in Durban during August

While his peers dominated the sports scene, Rahil Samlal is conquering the science lab. At the International Science Fair held in Boksburg 2017, he received the following accolades:

  • A gold medal,
  • A bursary from Stellenbosch,
  • An amazing three-year bursary for B. Sc. In Science from the University of Pretoria,
  • The Dr Derek Gray Award, which includes a trip to Stockholm, Sweden, to attend Noble Prize week, deliver a speech, and attend a dinner with the King and Queen of the country.
  • He is also going to participate in the INTEL Science Fair in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in May this year.
