Come March 8, a staggering yet impressive 1 300 children will descend upon St Dominics Newcastle from various parts of South Africa. This monster Curro event promises to showcase an array of the country’s top performing athletes.

Hailing from KwaZulu-Natal, the Free State and Mpumalanga, the children will come from various Curro Schools. Their visit driven by the need to dominate. They will be here to participate in the Curro Regional Sports Trials. A gruelling three-day event, where learners will by vying for a spot on the coveted Wildebeest team.

“At the regional trials, the learners will be competing in sevens rugby, hockey, netball and soccer,” said St Dominics Newcastle’s sports coach, Johan Jacobs. The purpose of the event is to select learners for the Wildebeest team. This team will then go to the National Championships.

“This is the first time St Dominics Newcastle is hosting the trials. It is also the first time the trials will be in a tournament format. So, it is a privilege for us at St Dominics to be hosting it this year,” Jacobs emphasised.

When learners are usually selected for the Wildebeest team, invigilators go to the relevant schools and trials are held among the school body. “But, the learners don’t get enough game time on the field this way. With the regional sports trials, a school team is made, and each child has enough time on the field to prove themselves,” Jacobs explained.

With masses of learners preparing to make their way to Newcastle, St Dominics Newcastle’s learners are prepping themselves for battle. Be sure to support the local learners, who will be able to represent Newcastle on a national level if selected for the Wildebeest team.

The event kicks off on Thursday, March 8, with hockey. The netball, soccer and rugby will then follow, with the event ending on Saturday, March 10.

Food stalls will be available, and the event promises to be an action-filled experience, catering for sport enthusiasts who enjoy competitive sports.
