Severe weather has resulted in the tragic loss of a woman’s life after a taxi she was travelling in was swept away by floodwaters in Utrecht.

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (KZN CoGTA) reported that on Wednesday, 16 April 2025, a taxi attempted to cross the Ncamndane River in Utrecht and was overcome by a powerful current.
“Four individuals were in the vehicle at the time. Three occupants managed to escape to safety; however, a 33-year-old female passenger was unable to escape and drowned. Reports received by the Department indicate that rescue teams were promptly dispatched to the scene. Efforts to recover the body were unsuccessful,” said the department, confirming that search and recovery operations are ongoing.

In response to this tragedy, MEC for KZN CoGTA, Reverend Buthelezi, expressed his condolences to the bereaved family and instructed disaster management teams to provide essential support during this difficult time.
As search efforts continue, KZN CoGTA noted that KwaZulu-Natal experienced level 4 and level 5 rainfall on Tuesday, 15 April 2025, and Wednesday, 16 April 2025, increasing the risk of flooding in low-lying areas. “The Provincial Disaster Management Centre continues to assess reports from various Districts, with an update to be provided in due course,” said KZN CoGTA, adding that MEC Buthelezi has urged residents to stay vigilant due to the ongoing threat posed by inclement weather.
MEC Buthelezi also called on travellers preparing for the Easter period to prioritise safety by taking precautions and monitoring weather forecasts.
“While the latest report from the weather service does not predict adverse weather conditions for the province during the Easter weekend, disaster management teams will remain on high alert,” concluded KZN CoGTA.

Newcastillian News offers its sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased during this challenging time.
