The incident occurred shortly after 11 am when the elderly couple came to a stop in their Mercedes-Benz at the traffic light on Drakensberg Drive.

“We had just come from the Pick ‘n Pay and stopped at the traffic light. As we started pulling away after the traffic light changed green for us, the driver of the Datsun crashed into our vehicle,” the visibly shaken elderly woman explained.

It is alleged that the Datsun driver, who was travelling along Allen Street, attempted to go through a red light, leading to the collision. The impact left the vehicles obstructing the flow of traffic, creating a chaotic scene as passing motorists manoeuvred around the two cars.

Newcastle SAPS, along with emergency personnel from KwaZulu-Private Ambulance and ER24, arrived swiftly at the scene.

Working alongside breakdown teams, they ensured that the elderly couple and the driver of the Datsun were tended to, and coordinated efforts to clear the vehicles.

No shocking incident this, just another statistic together with the other countless stats that occur daily.

  3. Yusuf Moosa says:

There’s an absolute don’t care attitude from many so called drivers who I feel are buying their licenses.
    Nothing will change
It will happen over and over again
    Sad to say the least.

  4. Daan Wessels says:

The majority of drivers in Newcastle have no respect for Stopsigns and Traffic lights. That includes a number of law enforcement officers, who must be setting the example, in marked official vehicles.
Respect for the law is supposed to be a cornerstone of society. When citizens, and law enforcement disregards traffic rules, the cracks in respect of the law by the community becomes evident.
It is the duty of the law enforcement agencies to see to it that laws are abided by, and the responsibility of each citizen to assist them. And for anybody who has an argument with that, I strongly advise them to read our Constitution.
For criminals (lawbreakers) to thrive, it only requires for ordinary citizens to do nothing.
