A local resident suffered severe injuries after a large section of a dead tree collapsed on him, leaving him bloodied and in pain.
The incident occurred just before 8 am as the man was attempting to remove the hazardous tree at the entrance of Camille Swimming Studio.
According to a witness at the scene, the man had been cautious, and aware of the risks posed by the dead tree. “He had taken the necessary precautions, and when he put a strap over one of the branches to begin safely removing the tree, the part of the tree where the branch had been attached suddenly came down as well,” the witness recounted.
Caught off guard, the man was unable to step back in time. The falling section struck him heavily, injuring his hand, leaving his face bloodied, and causing substantial damage to his leg. “A piece of bone could be seen pushing through the skin of his leg near the ankle,” the witness stated, describing the traumatic injuries.
Magenta Emergency Medical Services rushed to the scene, attending to the injured man. Paramedics stabilised him on-site, ensuring that his leg and hand were treated and wrapped, and connected him to a drip to manage his pain.
Charles Steyn of Magenta Emergency Medical Services later confirmed that, despite his injuries, the patient was in stable condition upon transport to the hospital.
As the paramedics continued their care, Newcastle Firefighters arrived to ensure that the remaining sections of the tree were dismantled safely, preventing further risk to anyone nearby.
