Mediclinic Newcastle’s Doctor of the Year Awards Shines Light on Five Outstanding Doctors

Superheroes captivate the imaginations of millions through their selfless demonstrations of bravery and sacrifice. However, the heroes that Hollywood presents to the public pale in comparison to medical professionals, who bear the responsibility for countless lives.

These medical professionals frequently forgo precious family time and jeopardise their own health, all in the pursuit of ensuring that others may lead fulfilling and healthy lives.

Enduring extended hours with minimal recompense and consistently prioritising their patients and communities, doctors unmistakably occupy a distinguished category. Although frequently overlooked in terms of recognition, an exuberant atmosphere pervaded the Pines on Saturday, 2 November 2024. The occasion to honour the dedication and sacrifices of these esteemed professionals had arrived, with Mediclinic Newcastle conducting its annual Doctor of the Year event.

Reflecting on the event, it is notable that five exemplary doctors were nominated by both staff members and patients of Mediclinic Newcastle, who shared their appreciation and unwavering support for the doctors who have profoundly influenced their lives. These nominations were thoughtfully aligned with Mediclinic’s core values: Client-Centred, Trusting and Respectful, Patient Safety Focused, Performance Driven, and Team Oriented, underscoring the deep commitment to excellence and compassion in healthcare.

The five nominees for the Doctor of the Year Award were as follows:

General Surgeon – Dr Luvuyo Dyasi

According to staff members who nominated him, Dr Dyasi transcends the role of a General Surgeon at Mediclinic Newcastle. His colleagues commend him for consistently extending himself beyond the call of duty, actively engaging with his patients and demonstrating a readiness to assist whenever needed.

“With patients, you need to be able to build a relationship through listening and finding out their concerns and ideas. Your behaviour shapes how much they trust you and are willing to share,” remarked a Mediclinic Newcastle staff member, who praised Dr Dyasi as a trusting and respectful doctor who practices with passion.

Furthermore, Dr Dyasi is acknowledged for his courteous and compassionate demeanour, embodying qualities such as empathy, politeness, and a genuine team spirit. He prioritises the needs of his patients above all and is always prepared to go the extra mile, both for those under his care and his fellow staff members.

Obstetrician and Gynaecologist – Dr Lethabo Kekana

Nominated for the prestigious title of Doctor of the Year, Dr Kekana was lauded as an exceptional and respectful physician by both her patients and the nursing team. She is further admired for her approachable and humble nature, with a strong dedication to patient-centric care, consistently prioritising the health and wellbeing of her patients.

Dr Kekana’s dedication is profound, embodying the compassionate and nurturing essence vital to her profession. A staff member highlighted her 24/7 availability for her patients, demonstrating an unwavering commitment and exceptional attention to each individual she consults. Renowned for her comprehensive knowledge and expertise in her speciality, Dr Kekana is also praised for her steadfast adherence to medical ethics, professionalism, and integrity in every facet of her practice

Anaesthesiologist – Dr Mbaliyethemba Ndwandwe

Dr Ndwandwe, Anaesthesiologist

Fulfilling a pivotal role in procedures and surgeries, Dr Ndwandwe is celebrated as an outstanding anaesthetist who prioritises quality in her practice. She is noted for her intense focus on her duties, particularly in the operating theatre. A staff member from Mediclinic Newcastle remarked, “Everything she says and does is all about the client. She always has the client’s best interests at heart, and at the same time, she maintains a healthy relationship with the team she works with in order for best patient care.”

In addition, Dr Ndwandwe is acknowledged for her professionalism, compassion, humility, respectfulness, and patient-centred approach. Described as a pleasure to collaborate with, she is recognised for her dedication and commitment to embodying Mediclinic’s values and her integral role as a team player.

General Surgeon – Dr Ayanda Shabalala

Dr Shabalala, General Surgeon

Dr Shabalala, known for his grounded, respectful, and professional demeanour, was nominated for the prestigious award owing to his exemplary standards and work ethic. As a General Surgeon, he consistently made time for his patients regardless of his schedule, going above and beyond to ensure they received the highest quality of care and treatment.

One staff member recalled a significant instance when Dr Shabalala diagnosed a patient with appendicitis during a physical examination, despite normal results from an abdominal ultrasound. “He took the patient to theatre, and the operation was successful, providing post-operative evidence of his diagnosis,” the staff member emphasised.

Furthermore, Dr Shabalala has been actively working to reduce waiting times for theatre, aiming to enhance the surgical experience for his patients and minimise their wait times.

His concern extends beyond the physical health of his patients. He meticulously ensures that all necessary authorisations and co-payment outcomes are secured before proceeding with surgery, safeguarding his patients from financial burdens in non-emergency situations.

Dr Shabalala’s nomination was also fuelled by his conduct and humility. “He adheres to Mediclinic policies and consistently prioritises the patient. He also shows respect to all staff members, regardless of their roles,” a staff member noted, emphasising his comprehensive approach to patient care and team collaboration.

Specialist Physician and Nephrologist – Dr Mthunzi Thusi

Dr Thusi, Specialist Physician and Nephrologist

Dr Thusi was also nominated for the prestigious Doctor of the Year award, which celebrated his exemplary work ethic. As a Nephrologist at Mediclinic Newcastle, he won the prestigious award in October 2023, following commendations from Mediclinic Newcastle staff and community members who noted his significant impact on his patients’ lives.

The professionalism and care exhibited in Dr Thusi’s approach to his patients and career were unmistakable. His dedication was so evident that his victory was anticipated by everyone, with colleagues and the Mediclinic Newcastle team unanimously extolling his virtues.

Additionally, Dr Thusi is highly regarded for valuing the nursing staff’s input and recognising their contributions, and he readily assists other doctors’ patients during emergencies when unforeseen circumstances arise.

A patient reflected on her experience under his care: “Dr Thusi is truly an outstanding doctor who embodies the values of Mediclinic Newcastle. During a daunting hospital stay, he provided reassurance to both me and my family. He conducted thorough assessments before any treatment and kept my family well informed, always being available to answer any questions,” she shared.

Furthermore, as guests arrived at the Pines to pay homage to these five doctors while celebrating their dedication, the atmosphere was taut with excitement, as everyone found themselves asking who would be 2024’s doctor of the year.

The anticipation built up as the ceremony progressed, each doctor’s efforts and commitment to their work highlighted. With Dr Dyasi, Dr Kekana, Dr Ndwandwe, Dr Shabalala and Dr Thusi showing remarkable passion for their patients, their colleagues, and their very careers, the decision on who would be the Doctor of the Year was no walk in the park.

However, when the announcement was made, the winner’s passion and commitment could not be argued as applause broke out after Dr Thusi was proclaimed the Doctor of the Year.

Having secured the title for the second year in a row, his victory showcased the faith community members and his fellow medical colleagues have in his expertise.

Upon receiving his accolade Doctor Thusi stated, “I’m extremely surprised at winning the ward for the second time in a row, but I am elated and I truly appreciate the support shown by both my colleagues and the community. Also, winning the award shows that Mediclinic Newcastle is dedicated to providing the community with excellence and it shows we are heading in the right direction in maintaining the wellbeing of the community.

Adding to this, Hospital General Manager, Japie Greyling said, “This award is not just a recognition; it is a testament to the values that define us: Being client-centred, promoting trust and respect, focusing on patient safety, driving performance, and working as a cohesive team.“

Moreover, Greyling highlighted that the Doctor of the Year award was extremely important as it showed the communities that relied on Mediclinic Newcastle, how much the medical facility valued excellence among its staff, while encouraging the medical professionals and hospital staff to continue striving for quality and excellence driven care.

While reflecting on Dr Thusi being dubbed Doctor of the Year, let us celebrate this highly dedicated and passionate doctor and his fellow nominees, for all they do for the Newcastle community.

  2. He was my doctor in a ward, he treated the disease and severe pains I had. When I got better, I was discharged and ran straight to school for my grade 12 learners, I got 100% pass in my subject, was also awarded by the circuit. He deserve it for the fact that he saved my life for the matric learners to get 100% pass rate.

  3. Masingta Rikhotso says:

  4. Noluthando says:

Kudos these specialists, may God continue to grant them strength and wisdom to continue saving lives. I wish there was a General Practitioner of the year award, maybe it would motivate some GP’s to do way better than they are doing although they are not driven by recognition of course. But it would be nice to see. Nurses as well (they sure contribute a lot). Maybe the community would also get an opportunity to vote. But regardless, congratulations to Dr. A. Shabalala, Dr. L. Dyasi, Dr. M. Ndwandwe, Dr. L. Kekana and our winner, Dr. M. Thusi. Keep shining!!!!😊

  5. Ismail Vahed says:

Dr kekana is absolutely superb as well. She helped my family deliver despite the fact that she went to Durban and back in a day! Yet she still returned and came for the delivery and did it all politely and with a smile on her face.

Also the nurses at mediclinic also deserve awards especially Sister Gugu Lungu and
    Sister Tina swart

As parents we are always stressed when it comes to birth – but from the moment we came sister Tina put us at ease with her warm personality and welcoming nature. She was also extremely hospitable to my other child who immediately took a liking to her warm personality as well as all my family members who came to visit. Her constant smiling and jovial demeanour while at the same time being professional is an example all of us should aspire to. She is a real credit to the mediclinic family (and she made us feel a part of the family too !)

Sister Gugu Lungu who was both the night nurse and present at delivery was absolutely special – she
    1) was extremely kind and helpful to my wife while in maternity
    2) very calming when she was wheeling my wife to theatre…with a good dose of humour!
    2) already understood my religious rites as a muslim when the baby is born and made it extremely easy for us to follow it
    4) bathing the baby

There should definitely be an award for nurses

  6. Corrine barnes says:

Congratulations Dr Thusi and the nominees that is wonderful

  7. Phumelele Hlongwane says:

Congratulations to the winner and all the nominees. I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Dyasi for his incredible work. He did an amazing job and healed my mother after a major surgery when we lost all hope. He was always available, answering our calls at any time and offering his assistance. May God richly bless him and expand his territory abundantly.

  8. Thuledu Nhlengethwa says:

Dr Thusi is the best Dr
