Now, four months later, families who lost their treasured possessions are beginning to see a glimmer of hope as the Newcastle Municipality, AIDS Foundation, Department of Correctional Services, and Amajuba District Municipality have united in a collective effort to rebuild the devastation left in the storm’s wake.
The Newcastle Municipality’s Communications Unit detailed this collaboration, which has launched a comprehensive relief programme aimed at rebuilding and restoring dignity to the affected families. Through the Ukusekela Small Project and Support Fund, the AIDS Foundation has generously provided vital building materials to renovate five severely damaged homes in Madadeni.
“The Department of Correctional Services has pledged support by engaging offenders in roofing repairs, fostering a spirit of restorative justice. The AIDS Foundation’s timely intervention has brought solace to vulnerable beneficiaries, including school children and women. The organisation’s two-pronged approach prioritises social justice and women empowerment, aligning with the municipality’s vision for inclusive development,” the Communications Unit explained.

During a visit to the affected families benefiting from this initiative, Newcastle Mayor Councillor Xolani Dube expressed heartfelt support, stating, “We will not leave anyone behind. Our partnership with the AIDS Foundation demonstrates our unwavering commitment to supporting our residents in times of crisis. This collaborative effort serves as a beacon of hope for the people of Newcastle as they rebuild and recover.”
Furthermore, the Communications Unit further highlighted that the contribution from the Ukusekela Small Project and Support Fund has not only alleviated suffering but also revitalised the community spirit. “Newcastle Municipality remains dedicated to ensuring that no resident is left vulnerable, fostering a culture of resilience and solidarity,” stated the Communications Unit.
