Red light ignored: Taxi collides with Suzuki in frightening crash

The piercing screech of tyres and the violent clash of metal shattered the early morning calm, as a taxi and a Suzuki collided at the bustling intersection of Sutherland and Scott Streets in Newcastle. In the aftermath, the Suzuki stood motionless in the centre of the road, while the taxi came to a stop a few metres away, partly mounted on the pavement outside the fencing of Pick n Pay.

The scene unfolded before the eyes of many motorists heading to work just after 7:00 AM on Tuesday, 22 October 2024.

Passersby watched as the stunned occupants of the Suzuki stood in disbelief, gazing at the mangled wreckage of the car they had been travelling in.

Recounting the traumatic moment, the Suzuki driver explained that she was driving down Scott Street when the incident transpired. “The traffic light was green for me, and as I was crossing the intersection, the taxi came from Sutherland Street, skipping the traffic light, which was red for him, and crashed into my vehicle,” she said, still visibly shaken by the incident that left her and her mother reeling in shock.

Attempts to speak with the taxi driver proved futile, as he declined to comment, choosing instead to remain silent until authorities arrived at the scene.

Emergency services and tow truck operators were soon on the scene, tending to the occupants of both vehicles, who had miraculously escaped serious injury. However, traffic in the area became congested, with the Suzuki blocking the intersection and causing minor delays for other commuters.

While no serious injuries were reported, the crash is now the subject of a police investigation. Moreover, motorists are being reminded to exercise extreme caution when navigating through the CBD, particularly when approaching intersections, and to adhere strictly to traffic signals.

When are these taxis ever gonna learn how a robort works?? It seems like the roads belong to them, and they can make their own rules putting other drivers at risk….Disgraceful really steps need to be taken asap!!!

Most of the taxi drivers have bought their licenses, we still have corrupt officials and a certain driving school in town who assists them to purchase their licenses. Remove the mini bus taxis from the roads take each driver through the proper channels, teach them road rules, basic manners and hopefully the roads will be safer. Investigate the traffic department throughly and get rid of the corrupt officials. Our road safety is worth more than their bribes they accept.

There are just more and more accidents in Newcastle. I was involved in a serious accident myself last year, where my car overturned and I broke my C6 vertebrae. The other driver skipped a stop sign and hit my car on the side. She had no licence. Nothing happened. Police did not even investigate, said they only investigate if someone is seriously injured or died?
This will not stop until the people that does not obey the road laws are punished accordingly.

Sadly, some tow truck operators pay bribes to some SAPS and some Traffic Police to not charge drivers. All they care about is securing a tow. I am busy with seeking justice fir a friend who was in a similar situation as yours. Let us hold these criminals accountable.
