The hit-and-run occurred shortly after 3 pm on Monday, 21 October 2024, when the woman had been driving up Coronation Road.

“I was just going over the speed hump and preparing to turn when a white panel van overtook me and hit my car,” the woman recounted, still reeling from the shock of the incident.

After colliding with her Hyundai, the offending van came to a screeching halt on the pavement, mere metres away. But before anyone could respond, the driver accelerated again, crashing into the Dimmock Lane street sign as he fled the scene in a panic. “He did not even stop to check if I was alright,” she added.

An eyewitness, who saw the entire chaotic scene unfold, confirmed the harrowing details. “I saw the driver of the Hyundai driving slowly over the speed hump when this white Toyota panel van came speeding and overtook her, hitting her car and then hitting the street sign before speeding away,” said the witness.

With the driver on the run, a traffic officer was dispatched to the scene to investigate. The van’s driver is now not only responsible for the collision and fleeing the scene but also faces financial liability for the destruction of the street sign, which is government property.

As investigations get underway, the eyewitness mentioned that they might know where the driver lives and promised to alert the authorities. However, both the motorist and the eyewitness were unable to note the registration number of the white Toyota panel van.

Therefore, Newcastle residents are now being called upon to assist law enforcement. If anyone has seen a white Toyota panel van with damage, particularly in the vicinity of Pioneer Park, they are urged to come forward with information.
