For many years, Newcastle’s road infrastructure has struggled with major issues, including large potholes, uneven surfaces, and even two sinkholes reported in just one month this year. However, a positive change may be on the horizon for the town’s roads

The Newcastle Municipality has commenced rehabilitation works on Allen and Kirkland Streets, two of the busiest roads in the area.
As reported by Newcastillian News on 7 October 2024, the Municipality began excavations on a section of Allen Street, particularly the stretch passing Taxi City. While this causes some disruptions to traffic flow, it marks the beginning of much-needed improvements to the road network.

In addressing the ongoing roadworks, the Newcastle Municipality’s Communications Unit highlighted that the Municipality is making strides in tackling the town’s road infrastructure challenges. “Following a period of unusual heavy rainfall in early 2023, the Newcastle area experienced severe flooding, which inflicted extensive damage on the roads and stormwater systems,” noted the Communications Unit.

In response to the critical need for repairs, the Municipality has secured funding for the 2024/2025 financial year and has outlined the following scope of work:
- Rehabilitation of 284.66 metres of road.
- Removal of the existing concrete surface.
- Construction of durable base layers.
- Surfacing the road with 30mm continuous graded asphalt.
- Road width varies between 8.5 and 8.7 metres.
- Maintenance of existing concrete kerbs.
- Cleaning the stormwater system.
- Road markings upon completion.
Moreover, the Communications Unit further explained that the Newcastle Municipality remains steadfast in its commitment to improving service delivery, despite the ongoing challenges faced by local government.
Mayor Xolani Dube also stressed the importance of these efforts, noting that effective road infrastructure is essential to the daily lives of commuters and plays a pivotal role in supporting local economic development. “Infrastructure is one of our most valuable assets, and we are determined to tackle these challenges head-on,” the Mayor stated, emphasising that this project represents not only a physical repair but also a renewed commitment to the community’s resilience and prosperity.
