Roadworks Alert: Allen Street sees major excavation

Allen Street, one of Newcastle’s busiest roads, serves as a vital link for thousands of motorists travelling to and from the Central Business District (CBD). However, drivers are being urged to exercise extra caution as significant roadworks have begun, impacting traffic flow.

On Monday, 7 October 2024, a large section of Allen Street was excavated as part of the Newcastle Municipality’s ongoing efforts to improve the road.

The current focus is on the stretch of road passing Taxi City, which has been a source of concern for some time due to numerous potholes and an uneven surface, posing risks to motorists.

The roadworks are concentrated on the lane leading out of the CBD towards Taxi City, between the intersection of Kirkland Street and Allen Street and the traffic lights outside the Taxi City entrance. As a result, this lane has been closed, requiring motorists entering the CBD from Newcastle Corner to share a lane with those exiting the CBD, creating additional pressure on traffic flow.

Cllr Bebsie Cronje from the Newcastle Municipality explained that the repairs are essential to prevent further deterioration and to improve road safety for all users. Additionally, while the time of completion could not be provided, contractors on-site claimed they are aiming to complete the project within approximately three weeks. However, they noted that weather conditions may affect this timeline, potentially extending the work to two months.

While the roadworks are currently causing some delays, motorists are encouraged to be patient and remain vigilant for the safety of other road users and pedestrians, especially as only one lane is operational.

This street is excavated at least once each year at least for the past 10 – 15 years. I always ask myself what is it that they can’t seem to correct and get it over and done with once and for all!

Hope the municipality gets it right this time and are using people with the correct know how and expertise to fix this road. Huge waste of taxpayers money in the previous attempts. Good luck with the repair. We are waiting patiently to see the end result 🙏🙏
