A scene of devastation along the N11 was found on the Amajuba Pass, on Monday afternoon, 30 September 2024, following a violent collision between a taxi and a light motor vehicle that resulted in multiple injuries and claimed the life of one individual.
The incident unfolded at approximately 12:30 pm when a motorist sent out a desperate voice note via emergency channels on WhatsApp, urgently calling for immediate assistance within moments of the collision.
His voice, tinged with panic, echoed the fear and urgency that gripped the area.
Paramedics from ER24 Emergency Medical Services and KwaZulu Emergency Medical Services raced to the scene, only to be met by a chaotic environment. Upon their arrival, the team sent out calls for additional support from local emergency medical teams, with KwaZulu Private Ambulance quickly dispatching their crew to assist in the rescue efforts.
While the precise details surrounding the collision are still being investigated, an official source on the scene explained that an eyewitness account claimed the car had allegedly attempted to overtake another vehicle before crashing into the taxi.
Ziyaad Warasally from ER24 confirmed the grim toll of the accident, stating that 14 passengers from the taxi sustained injuries.
“There were also four occupants from the car who were injured, while the fifth occupant of the car unfortunately passed away as a result of their injuries,” he explained, capturing the sombre reality of the aftermath.
In the wake of the collision, law enforcement officials from Charlestown, Volksrust, and Newcastle arrived on the scene to restore order and manage the chaos. This necessitated the closure of the road, as SAPS forensics launched an in-depth investigation into the crash site. This, while paramedics worked to attend to the injured, while tow truck drivers did their best to clear the wreckages, leading to severe traffic disruptions in the area.
In light of this tragedy, Road Angels South Africa has urgently implored motorists to slow down while travelling and adhere strictly to both speed limits and traffic regulations.
Furthermore, Charles Steyn of Magenta Emergency Medical Services further emphasised the importance of accurate reporting in such emergencies. “Initial reports stated there were two people injured, but afterwards it was found to be more people. When reporting accidents, it is crucial to provide comprehensive details about the scene, including the number of individuals involved, so that emergency personnel can take the necessary steps when responding,” he explained.
As investigations into the incident continue, Newcastillian News extends its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased.
