According to SAWS, severe thunderstorms are expected to develop during the late afternoon, continuing into the evening.

The intensity of the anticipated storms could lead to localised damage to infrastructure, homes, vehicles, and even livestock. Therefore, communities within the affected areas are advised to prepare for potential impacts.

In addition, SAWS has warned that the storms may bring flooding to vulnerable roads, as well as serious threats to personal safety. The risk of lightning strikes poses a danger to life, with possible injuries and the potential for power surges due to excessive lightning activity.

The following towns and cities are expected to bear the brunt of the severe thunderstorms:

  • Ladysmith
  • Estcourt
  • Indaka
  • Underberg
  • Kokstad
  • Pietermaritzburg
  • Impendle
  • Giants Castle
  • Mooi River
  • Richmond
  • Howick
  • Umzimkhulu

While not expected to be affected by the severe weather, according to AccuWeather, Newcastle, Dundee, Dannhauser and Utrecht can expect rainfall during the course of the late afternoon. Readers can rest assured that Newcastillian News will provide immediate updates from SAWS or the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (KZNCOGTA) if any changes arise.
