A woman narrowly escaped a terrifying ordeal after her ex-boyfriend launched a violent attack on her in the middle of the night. The incident has prompted the Newcastle SAPS to launch a comprehensive investigation into the alarming case.
According to Newcastle SAPS Spokesperson Lizzy Arumugam, the terrifying episode unfolded just before midnight on Wednesday, 4 September 2024, in Fairleigh.
“The woman reported that she was asleep when her ex-boyfriend entered her home and attempted to suffocate her with a pillow. She managed to escape, but the suspect then pointed a firearm at her, threatening to kill and bury her,” Arumugam revealed.
Despite the intense fear and shock the woman managed to escape from her enraged ex and reported the incident to the Newcastle SAPS. Realising that his victim would not relent until justice was served, the suspect fled the scene.
Arumugam explained that in a coordinated response, the Newcastle SAPS operational team acted on information about the suspect’s location. A joint operation was launched involving the Newcastle K9 Unit, Newcastle Police Station CPF, Optimus Protection Services, and the Anti-Hijacking Unit to track him down.
“He was located and positively identified at an informal tavern in the Siyahlala/Dunuza area on 6 September 2024. The suspect was arrested and charged, and he appeared before the Newcastle Magistrate Court on 9 September 2024, facing charges of attempted murder and pointing a firearm,” Arumugam said.
