The terrifying ordeal began around 3 am as the two men were walking home, unaware of the danger lurking ahead.

According to reports, as they made their way down John Parks Road, three men suddenly appeared, their intentions becoming clear following one of the men brandishing a firearm.

With the barrel of the gun pointed directly at them, the two men were frozen in shock. The situation quickly escalated as the suspects demanded their money, ultimately robbing them of a substantial sum of R7,200.

Following this, the crime took a horrifying turn when the gunman shot one of the victims before the three assailants fled into the darkness. Miraculously, the injured man survived the gunshot and was transported to a local medical facility, where he is receiving treatment for his wounds.

Newcastle SAPS spokesperson Lizzy Arumugam addressed the incident, stating, “Newcastle SAPS is currently investigating the matter, and no arrests have been made.”

She further emphasised the police’s commitment to tracking down the dangerous criminals responsible for this act.

Arumugam was unable to provide an update on the victim’s condition at this time but reiterated the urgency of the investigation. She also issued a stern warning to residents, urging them to avoid walking alone, particularly after dark. “Walk in well-lit, busy streets and in a group if possible. Also, always let someone know where you are going and how long you’ll be gone,” she advised.

Furthermore, Arumugam encouraged residents to remain vigilant while on foot, whether in the CBD or residential areas and to be on the lookout for suspicious vehicles or individuals.

As the investigation into this robbery continues, if you have any information that could assist the investigation, you are urged to contact the SAPS.

Newcastle SAPs is always warning the community instead of doing their job. These incidents are becoming more and more yet you do not see any visible police presence in high risk areas or anywhere for that matter
