In an effort to revitalise Newcastle’s industrial sectors and harness its tourism potential, Newcastle Municipality Mayor, Cllr Dube, along with Speaker of Council Tengi Zulu and Development and Planning Chairperson Cllr Bertie Meiring, extended a warm welcome to representatives from the US Embassy. The gathering took place at the Mayor’s Parlour on Wednesday, 14 August 2024, and was attended by several senior Municipal Officials.
Heading the US delegation was Consul-General Josie Ratcliffe, flanked by Political Economic Officer Ashley Morefield and Syabonga Msweli, a Political Economic Specialist.
The Municipality’s Communications Unit revealed that the key aim of this high-profile meeting was to explore opportunities for attracting US investors to Newcastle. “Such investments are seen as essential for reducing unemployment in the region by generating job opportunities and bolstering Small, Medium, and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs). While no firm commitments were made during the discussions, the prospects look promising,” the Communications Unit explained.
Moreover, Mayor Dube took the opportunity to underline the immense potential that Newcastle holds, particularly with its rich coal reserves. He also highlighted the urgent need for upgrading the town’s ageing infrastructure, especially in addressing ongoing issues with water, sewer systems, and roads. Mayor Dube further pointed out the significant value that Newcastle’s educated and skilled youth could offer to prospective investors.
“This meeting showcases the municipality’s unwavering dedication to enhancing the welfare and empowerment of Newcastle’s residents,” the Communications Unit concluded.
