The uThukela District Municipality explained that it had to temporarily suspend the abstraction of water from the Bergville Canal from Monday, 29 July 2024, following the discovery of numerous dead fish in the river.

Due to the disturbing discovery, the district municipality explained, “Together with other relevant institutions, uThukela is actively investigating the incident and has conducted water tests, with laboratory results pending.”

While waiting for the laboratory results, the District Municipality explained that as a precautionary measure, water pumping into reservoirs in Zwelisha, Langkloof, and Bergville had been halted.

Moreover, on Wednesday morning, 30 July 2024, the uThukela District Municipality advised all residents in Colenso, Winterton and Bergville to boil tap water used for drinking, following traces of E. coli found to be affecting the Colenso and Bergville Water Works Treatment Plants.

“uThukela District Municipality is closely monitoring the water quality following the discovery of numerous dead fish in the Bergville Canal. The discovery of E.coli comes after internal laboratory test results conducted by the Municipality yesterday, 29 July 2024,” said the Municipality.

Residents are urged to boil water until the Municipality is confident there is no longer a public health concern. The district municipality assured that regular updates would be provided as the situation is monitored.
