Such is the nature of the warning, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (KZNCOGTA) has placed disaster management teams on high alert following a severe wind warning issued by the South African Weather Service.

Expected Conditions:
Damaging Northwest Winds: Wind speeds are anticipated to reach up to 70 km/h, with gusts exceeding 80 km/h.
High Temperatures: Combined with the strong winds, the high temperatures are likely to exacerbate the risk of fires.
Potential Impacts:
Structural Damage: The high winds have the potential to cause significant damage to buildings and infrastructure, including roofs, windows, and other structural elements.
Risk of Injuries from Debris: Flying debris from strong winds can pose a serious risk of injury to outside individuals.
Challenges in Road Travel: High winds can make driving hazardous, particularly for high-profile vehicles, and can lead to road closures due to fallen trees and debris.
Safety Measures:
Secure Property: Residents are advised to secure any loose items around their homes and properties to prevent them from being picked up by the wind.
Stay Indoors: It is recommended to remain indoors whenever possible to avoid the risk of injury from flying debris and to stay safe from the high winds.
Minimise Non-Essential Travel: Residents should avoid any non-essential travel to reduce the risk of accidents on the roads.
Additional Concerns:
Veld Fire Disaster management teams are also actively responding to veld fires across the province.
The strong winds, coupled with high temperatures, have created ideal conditions for runaway fires. Residents are warned about the dangers posed by these fires and are urged to take the necessary precautions to protect themselves and their properties.
Preventive Measures for Fires:
Do Not Start Fires: Avoid starting any open fires, as they can quickly spread out of control.
Report Fires Immediately: If you spot a fire, report it immediately to the local fire department or emergency services.
Create Firebreaks: If you live in a rural area, consider creating firebreaks around your property to help prevent the spread of fires.
“The KZNCOGTA remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents. We urge everyone to stay informed through official channels and to take all necessary precautions during this period of severe weather,” said KZNCOGTA.
As the South African Weather Service and KZNCOGTA warn of inclement weather, residents of Newcastle and surrounding towns are encouraged to practice caution.
