A wave of pride is sweeping through the Newcastle Municipality as Newcastle’s Mayor, Councillor Xolani Dube, has officially been elected as the Chairperson of SALGA KZN.

This significant achievement, which took place on Thursday, 26 June 2024, heralds a new era for Newcastle and its neighbouring municipalities across KwaZulu-Natal.
For those unfamiliar, SALGA KZN is the provincial branch of the South African Local Government Association, representing the interests of local governments within KwaZulu-Natal. The organisation serves as the collective voice for the province’s 61 municipalities, championing their causes and advocating on their behalf. Its foundation is firmly rooted in Section 163 of the RSA Constitution and the Organised Local Government Act of 1997.
The administration of the SALGA KZN office is overseen by the Provincial Executive Officer and the management team, with political guidance provided by the Provincial Executive Committee. The ultimate authority within SALGA KZN lies with its annual Provincial Members Assembly (PMA), held before the National Members Assembly (NMA).
Moreover, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa’s largest province by membership, boasts 61 municipalities, including 10 district municipalities and one metro. As Councillor Dube steps into his new role while continuing to serve as Newcastle’s Mayor, the Newcastle Municipality is filled with excitement and anticipation.
Councillor Thengi Zulu, Speaker for the Newcastle Municipal Council, expressed immense pride in the Mayor’s accomplishment. “The Mayor is committed to serving the people of Newcastle, and his election as Chairperson for KZN SALGA shows his dedication. Also, when considering where the Mayor comes from, growing up in Blaauwbosch and working his way up, he understands the needs of people and can put immense positive input into KZN as a whole,” remarked Councillor Zulu.
Furthermore, Councillor Bertie Meiring extended heartfelt congratulations to Councillor Dube. “We would like to congratulate the Mayor. Having Councillor Dube in this position will open many doors for our community.” Councillor Faizel Cassim highlighted the importance of the Mayor’s election, describing it as a substantial milestone. “This is a significant accolade, and we are thrilled for Councillor Dube, especially as SALGA KZN oversees the municipalities in our province,” said Councillor Cassim.
Municipal Manager Zamani Mcineka expressed his best wishes for Councillor Dube’s success in his new role. “Under his leadership, we eagerly anticipate seeing him excel as the SALGA KZN Chairperson,” stated Mcineka.

With Councillor Dube poised to assume the responsibilities of SALGA KZN Chairperson while continuing his mayoral duties, the Newcastle Municipality eagerly anticipates the positive changes this dual role will bring to both Newcastle and KwaZulu-Natal.
