The Newcastle Municipality is addressing infrastructure issues head-on to enhance service delivery in Newcastle, focussing on both stormwater infrastructure and the town’s road network.

In light of this, on Sunday, 23 June 2024, the Municipality’s Technical Team worked on stormwater maintenance in Voortrekker and Sutherland Streets.
According to the Newcastle Municipality’s Communications Unit, this effort is a critical aspect of urban infrastructure management. They noted that neglecting it could lead to a range of societal and environmental problems, from flooding to water pollution and erosion.
Newcastle Mayor, Councillor Xolani Dube, emphasised that prioritising stormwater drain maintenance and using pipelining when necessary can ensure the reliable performance of these essential systems, protecting Newcastle’s communities from the devastating consequences of stormwater-related issues.

While improving stormwater drainage in Newcastle’s CBD, the Municipality is also addressing pressing road infrastructure issues within its jurisdiction. Recognising the critical importance of well-maintained roads for residents’ well-being, the Newcastle Municipality stated that it has embarked on several strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing road conditions and ensuring sustainable infrastructure development.
Moreover, the Communications Unit highlighted several pivotal projects currently underway, each poised to significantly improve the quality of life for Newcastle’s residents, in line with the vision of Newcastle’s Mayor.

“One of the foremost projects is the reconstruction of a critical bridge in uMndozo that was destroyed by the storm that ravaged through the town in previous weeks, cutting off a vital lifeline that connects communities,” said the Communications Unit.
Additionally, the Municipality is undertaking extensive re-gravelling projects in Madadeni, Osizweni, Blaaubosch, and surrounding areas, transforming local roads into smoother, safer pathways for all users. Complementing these efforts is a relentless campaign to patch potholes across the city, ensuring that roadways remain safe and navigable.

“These projects resonate deeply with our community members, they have voiced their concerns about road safety, and as a caring local government, we are committed to addressing these critical issues daily. Our aim is to enhance the overall quality of life in Newcastle and to demonstrate our unwavering commitment to serving the needs of our residents,” asserted Councillor Dube.
The Communications Unit further highlighted that these initiatives exemplify the Municipality’s dedication to improving Newcastle’s infrastructure. “By focusing on essential projects like the uMndozo bridge reconstruction, re-gravelling of roads, tarring of roads, and comprehensive pothole patching, the Newcastle Municipality is paving the way for a brighter, more connected future,” they said.
