This Week's Update on KwaZulu-Natal's Dam Levels

Following the intense weather that impacted parts of KwaZulu-Natal this week, which included heavy rains, hail, and even two tornadoes, the question now stands: how are KwaZulu-Natal’s dams faring?

According to the Department of Water and Sanitation’s (DWS) KwaZulu-Natal Provincial State of Dams report, a large majority of the province’s dams are in a healthy condition.

With this in mind, we now take a closer look at the DWS report on the condition of KZN dams:

  • Albert Falls Dam is currently at 98.9%, a slight increase from the previous week’s 98.1%.
  • Bivane Dam’s water levels remain unchanged at 100.5%.
  • Craigie Burn Dam’s water levels are at 100.2%, an insignificant change from last week’s 100.1%.
  • Driel Barrage Dam, according to the DWS, sees its water levels remaining unchanged at a steady 91.8%.
  • Goedertrouw Dam’s water levels noted a slight increase, rising from last week’s 95.2% to this week’s reading of 95.7%.
  • Hazelmere Dam’s water levels are currently at 83.5% as compared to the previous week’s reading of 83.2%.
  • Hluhluwe Dam’s water levels have risen from last week’s 98% to this week’s 98.7%.
  • Inanda Dam sees its water levels at a healthy 100.9%, a slight difference from the previous week’s 100.6%.
  • Klipfontein Dam’s water levels are at 95.8%, an improvement from the previous week’s 94.7%.
  • Mearns Dam sports a reading of 102.6%, as compared to the previous week’s 102.1%.
  • Midmar Dam saw an increase in its water levels, rising from last week’s 95.7% to this week’s 96.2%.
  • Nagle Dam sports a reading of 89.6%, as compared to the previous week’s reading of 89%.
  • Ntshingwayo (Chelmsford) Dam’s water levels are at 76.7%, as compared to the previous week’s reading of 76.1%.
  • Pongolapoort Dam’s water levels are currently at 96.1%, a significant increase from the previous week’s 85.7%.
  • Spioenkop Dam remains unchanged at a steady 100.1%.
  • Spring Grove Dam’s water levels are currently at 99.6%, a slight improvement from the previous week’s reading of 98.1%.
  • Wagendrift Dam is at 100.4%, a slight difference from the previous week’s 100.2%.
  • Woodstock Dam remains unchanged at 101%.
  • Zaaihoek Dam, according to the DWS, remains at a steady 90.6%.

While the majority of the province’s dams are in a healthy condition, residents are reminded that water conservation remains an important focal point to protect local water resources.
