Warning: Severe thunderstorms to impact Newcastle and surroundings

Level 4 Thunderstorm Warning for Numerous KZN Towns

Various towns across the KwaZulu-Natal are being urged to brace for severe thunderstorms set to hit on Monday. According to the South African Weather Service (SAWS), these intense storms will commence in the afternoon, starting at 3 pm and persisting until 11 pm.

The weather service has indicated that the thunderstorms will be accompanied by damaging winds, hail, and heavy downpours, potentially causing the following localised impacts:

  • Damage to infrastructure, settlements, vehicles, livelihoods, and livestock.
  • Flooding of vulnerable roads.
  • Injuries and danger to life due to lightning.
  • Power surges caused by excessive lightning.

Furthermore, SAWS has identified the following towns as being at risk of severe thunderstorms:

  • Newcastle
  • Ladysmith
  • Vryheid
  • Dannhauser
  • Utrecht
  • Dundee
  • Estcourt
  • Mooi River
  • Bergville
  • Sobabili
  • Mpofana
  • Indaka  
  • eDumbe
  • Msinga
  • Nquthu

In light of this forecast, SAWS urges residents in the towns mentioned above to exercise caution and avoid travelling on bridges and roads in low-lying areas, as these may be prone to flooding and potential sinkholes. Residents are also advised to refrain from outdoor activities due to the risks posed by hail, lightning, and flooding, which can result in injury or even death.

If possible, stay indoors, away from windows, and ensure your vehicles, pets, and livestock are adequately sheltered.
