Moreover, the Communications Unit emphasised the importance and impact of these efforts, stating the following:

“With remedial efforts to ensure that the municipality is in line with its 2035 vision of being a sustainable economically vibrant city region that affords its citizens a high quality of life, it’s becoming increasingly crucial for wastewater treatment plants that already exist to be upgraded so that they can effectively and efficiently handle wastewater in a resourceful and ideally, in an environmentally friendly manner”

With a firm commitment to tackling infrastructure challenges within the city, the Newcastle Municipality stated that it had launched the Madadeni Wastewater Treatment Plant upgrade project, which is now gaining momentum. The Communications Unit expressed satisfaction with the project’s progress, revealing that it is nearing completion, with overall progress reaching an impressive 93%.

The total cost of the project is estimated at R136,008,590.50, with the added benefit of creating employment opportunities for individuals across different demographics, including adults, youth, and persons with disabilities.

Furthermore, the Communications Unit highlighted the project will address raw sewage discharge and the issue of the pollution of water resources. “The upgrade of the Madadeni Wastewater Treatment Plant is very critical in reducing pollution and improving the environment but will also ensure sufficient treatment capacity to support future growth,” added Newcastle Mayor Cllr Xolani Dube.

As per the municipal entity, in line with its commitment to service delivery, the Newcastle Municipality continues to implement various initiatives. The Communications Unit reiterated this commitment, stating, “The Newcastle Municipality continues to prioritise service delivery and has implemented various initiatives to ensure its commitment of delivering services to the people is achieved.”
