A Newcastle woman residing along Coronation Road in Pioneer Park endured a terrible ordeal at the hands of her live-in partner, who allegedly strangled her and threatened her with a hammer.

Narrating her ordeal on Tuesday evening, 14 May 2024, the woman explained, “My boyfriend went out and I went to the Pick n Pay to withdraw money quick. After I got home, he came back and started fighting with me. He then threw me on the bed, and started strangling me.”
The woman further stated that the boyfriend then went to get a hammer to hit her. Fortunately, he was stopped by a family member of his.
Moreover, the woman claimed that after the family member left, her boyfriend forced her to sleep outside in the cold, without the use of a blanket. Then on Wednesday morning, 15 May 2024, the woman’s boyfriend assaulted her again. Following the traumatic incident, she told him that she was leaving and quickly fled their home shortly before 8 am.
As she walked down Coronation Road, she encountered a motorist who had stopped to attend to a phone call. Tearfully, she confided in him about the abuse she had suffered and implored him to transport her to the Newcastle SAPS to open a case against her boyfriend.
Without hesitation, the motorist rushed her to the police station, where officers attended to her distress.
When asked about helping the woman, the motorist stated that while he was on his way to work he could not leave her. “She clearly needed help and in Newcastle we look after each other, even if we don’t know each other,” declared the motorist.
As police now take over the matter, the woman recounted that during the night when her boyfriend assaulted her, she called for help, but no one came to her aid. Instead, she was left to seek help from a passing stranger the next day—a clear indication that people need to take a page out of the caring motorist’s book and look out for their fellow Newcastillians.
