Exciting developments are on the horizon for Durnacol, as the Amajuba Municipality has officially awarded a contract worth R178 million to tackle water supply issues within the community.
The Amajuba District Municipality’s Communications Unit elaborated that, in response to the persistent water challenges faced by the Durnacol community, Amajuba District Mayor Cllr Ndabuko Zulu recently convened a meeting with residents of Dannhauser Local Municipality.
The purpose was to introduce the appointed contractor tasked with constructing the long-awaited emergency water supply to Ramaphosa Settlement, Skombaren, and the 2 Ml Reservoir at Hilltop—Phases 1 and 2.
“The handing over of the contractor will mark the start of end of a painful chapter for the local communities of wards 2, 3, and 7, who will soon have access to a reliable distribution network for bulk potable water for the first time in months,” stated the District Municipality’s Communications Unit, adding that the project, which commenced in January 2024, is expected to span 18 months and has a substantial budget of millions of rand.
Moreover, the project’s scope includes laying a 17.9km pipeline from Durnacol to the Hilltop reservoirs, erecting a 5 Ml reservoir at Durnacol, and installing a 200-kl brake pressure tank.
While primarily aimed at bolstering water supply in the Dannhauser area of Durnacol, the District Municipality highlighted that the project will also benefit over 10,000 households and has generated more than 50 job opportunities for residents, thereby positively impacting the local economy while empowering residents.
