As the Newcastle South African Police Service (SAPS) continues its efforts to combat crime, AfriForum has stated that it will also step up to join the fight against this escalating problem.
On 19 April 2024, AfriForum affirmed that it will be organising a mass patrol across numerous sections of Newcastle.
According to Ferdi Dedekind of AfriForum Safety Newcastle, this event will form part of a national patrol initiative, whereby AfriForum branches across South Africa will increase visibility to promote safer communities.
Moreover, Dedekind stressed the importance of the AfriForum Neighbourhood Watch in strengthening community resilience through proactive and reactive actions. “The purpose of the National Patrol is to establish high visibility within the relevant Neighbourhood Watch’s area of responsibility in order to demonstrate a proven sense of security towards the residents and wider population,” explained Dedekind.
To carry out proactive and reactive crime prevention actions across the country, AfriForum has invited the SAPS, Traffic Department, Security Companies, Neighbourhood Watch groups, and Community Policing Forums (CPF) to participate in the patrol.
As per the civil rights organisation, the patrol is set to start from Newcastle Corner at 7 pm and will continue throughout the night until 2 am.
Concluding, Dedekind welcomed residents to join the patrol, emphasising community involvement in combating crime.
