According to police reports, around 50 people staged a blockade on Wednesday morning, 14 February 2024, obstructing the road and preventing vehicles from passing through.

A police source stated, “They were demanding to see the Newcastle Municipality’s Mayor regarding service delivery issues they were facing.”

The presence of a significant number of protesters prompted a robust response from law enforcement, particularly due to the ongoing by-elections in Osizweni, taking place in close proximity to the protest site. Consequently, the police have effectively managed the situation.

Although the road has since reopened, concerns persist regarding the potential resurgence of protest actions. Therefore, law enforcement agencies are maintaining a vigilant stance, closely monitoring the Newcastle to Utrecht Road for any signs of renewed disruption.

In light of these developments, motorists are strongly encouraged to remain vigilant while travelling along this route and to promptly report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
