Newcastle police make 250 arrests in January

 The Newcastle SAPS has reported a significant achievement, making around 250 arrests in the first month of the year.

Spokesperson Lizzy Arumugam highlighted their commitment to combating crime in the area stating, “In our ongoing endeavours to eradicate the scourge of crime in our communities, the Newcastle SAPS, in conjunction with other law enforcement agencies, social partners, and security companies, has, since 1 January 2024 till 31 January 2024, arrested 250 persons.”

During various operations conducted by the Newcastle Police, Arumugam outlined the arrests made for a range of offenses, including:

  •  Attempted murder
  • Business burglary
  • House breaking at residential premises
  • Theft of motor vehicle
  • Common assault
  • Sexual assault
  • Contravention of Protection Order
  • Theft
  • Fraud
  • Possession of unlicensed firearms
  • Robbery
  • Common robbery
  • Robbery with a weapon
  • Possession of suspected stolen property
  • Shoplifting
  • Property
  • Drunk driving
  • Possession of heroin
  • Possession of mandrax
  • Possession of drugs
  • Kidnapping
  • Attempted stock theft
  • Dealing in drugs.

Furthermore, Arumugam explained that Brigadier Vassie Naidoo, the Station Commander of Newcastle SAPS, commends the efforts of dedicated officers in apprehending outstanding wanted suspects.

Additionally, she emphasised that Brigadier Naidoo and the Newcastle SAPS call on residents to actively work with the police and report any illegal activities.

In addition, Arumugam highlighted the emerging issue of ATM fraud in Newcastle. “We have received a number of cases over recent days, and while officers are investigating the various cases, residents are being encouraged to be vigilant at ATMs in town and to report all incidents where they are impacted,” said Arumugam.
