According to reports from the South African Police Service (SAPS), the man had been out drinking at a tavern with his friends. Subsequently, as they made their way home that evening, tragedy struck.

“While crossing the river, the man was swept away by a strong current of water. His friends managed to get out of the water, but they could not find the missing man due to the volume of water and it being dark,” revealed a police source.
SAPS divers initiated a search for the missing man on Sunday night. However, due to adverse conditions, they were forced to call off their efforts. They resumed the search on Monday, 5 February, but as of now, the man remains missing.
Furthermore, the Newcastle SAPS Search and Rescue team stated that they will tirelessly continue their search operations on Tuesday, 6 February 2024, and the man will not be declared dead until he is found.

The community is urged to remain vigilant and provide any information that may aid in locating the missing individual.

The tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by bodies of water, especially during adverse weather conditions. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the missing man during this difficult time.
