In a fortunate turn of events, a woman miraculously avoided serious injury after a collision sent her vehicle hurtling into the wooden perimeter fence at the Engen Fuelling Station on Allen Street, Newcastle.
The incident unfolded on Wednesday afternoon, 31 January 2024, as the woman was driving along Paterson Street. Upon reaching the intersection of Allen Street and Paterson Street, her small Chevrolet bakkie was struck by a VW Tiguan.
The force of the impact propelled the Chevrolet bakkie with such intensity that it slammed into the wooden fence surrounding the fuelling station. Recounting the terrifying moment, the bakkie’s driver remarked, “It felt like everything was in slow motion.”
An official source at the scene explained that the matter would need to be investigated, but it was alleged that the VW’s motorist did not stop at the traffic lights, which were inactive due to loadshedding at the time of the incident.
Remarkably, the VW Tiguan sustained minimal damage and managed to come to a stop in a nearby parking bay following the collision.
Fortunately, neither driver sustained injuries in the crash. Traffic officials and Atlas Towing promptly responded to the scene to facilitate the clearing of the area and ensure the safety of motorists.
In the aftermath of the collision, emergency personnel are urging motorists to exercise heightened caution, particularly when navigating intersections during instances of loadshedding.
As the investigation continues into the circumstances surrounding the collision, what are your thoughts?
