Motorists are advised to steer clear of the R602, the road connecting Ladysmith and Dundee, as it has been officially closed due to a perilous situation unfolding on a bridge along the route.
As seen in the below video, the bridge is in the process of collapsing, prompting a stern warning from Road Angel Traffic Information, “The road is closed off for safety reasons; do not use the road, as it will not end well.”
Adding to this growing problem, inclement weather which is set to prevail, is allegedly the cause of the damage. With this in mind, Charles Steyn from Magenta Emergency Medical Services highlighted that the South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Yellow Level Warning for heavy thunderstorms in KwaZulu-Natal and other regions.
Not only does this warning pose a significant amount of danger to those who intend to try and use the road between Ladysmith and Dundee, but Steyn said people need to be prepared and have sandbags on standby.
“If you are in low-lying areas, make sure you are aware of what the weather is,” he pointed out.
As soon as there is a possibility of flash floods, emergency personnel would notify residents in their respective towns.
With the road hazard between Ladysmith and Dundee, alongside emergency personnel warning residents to monitor the weather, one cannot forget the flash floods that hit Newcastle in February 2023 that left large parts of the town flooded.
