Severe thunderstorm warning issued for Northern KwaZulu-Natal towns

With rainfall touching ground, the South African Weather Service (SAWS) has raised alarms by issuing a Level 2 Warning for severe thunderstorms anticipated to strike several towns in Northern KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday, 3 January 2023.

The weather service forecasts the impending adverse weather to unleash potential heavy downpours, intense lightning, and powerful damaging winds across the western regions of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) and the midlands.

The anticipated impacts of these weather conditions are outlined as follows:

  • Localised damage to infrastructure, settlements, vehicles, livelihood and livestock.
  • Localised flooding of susceptible roads.
  • Major roads will be affected by increased travel times.
  • Difficult driving conditions on dirt roads.
  • Minor motor vehicle accidents due to slippery roads and reduced visibility.

The towns expected to bear the brunt of the thunderstorms include:

  • Newcastle
  • Ladysmith
  • Vryheid
  • Underberg
  • Dannhauser
  • eDumbe
  • Utrecht
  • Dundee
  • Greater Kokstad
  • Msinga
  • Mooi River
  • Bergville
  • Richmond
  • Msunduzi
  • uMngeni
  • Umvoti
  • Giants Castle

The adverse weather conditions are projected to prevail from 2 pm until 9 pm on Wednesday, prompting SAWS to caution motorists. Drivers are advised to exercise prudence, avoiding travel on bridges and low-lying roads susceptible to flooding or approaching such areas with heightened caution.

“Avoid outdoor activities as lightning, hail and flooding may result in injuries and death. If possible, stay indoors well clear of windows, shelter pets, and cover vehicles,” said SAWS.
