The joyous beginning of the festive season has taken a sorrowful turn as a collision resulted in the untimely demise of two doctors and two women.
The heart wrenching incident unfolded on Friday morning, 22 December 2023, at approximately 3 am on Asiphephe Drive, between Madadeni and Newcastle.
According to an official police spokesperson, the driver reportedly lost control of his vehicle beneath the bridge on Asiphephe Drive, en route to Madadeni, leading to the vehicle overturning multiple times.
The official police account reveals that there were seven occupants in the vehicle, consisting of two men and five women. “When the ambulance arrived at the scene, the driver of the Grey BMW, and the second male were both identified as local doctors. They died on the scene alongside two of the female passengers. The three remaining women sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Madadeni Hospital,” said the police source.
The vehicle, extensively damaged in the collision, presented a grim scene, with officials reporting scattered bodies. Emergency personnel worked tirelessly until just past 5 am, clearing the wreckage and providing care to the injured women.
While the exact cause of the driver’s loss of control remains unknown, an official at the scene disclosed the discovery of alcohol within the vehicle. Law enforcement authorities are conducting thorough investigations into the incident.
Furthermore, Charles Steyn of Magenta Emergency Medical Services said, “We can only urge motorists to drive with caution and take road and weather conditions into consideration by driving below the required speed limit.”
He added that while it is the festive time of the year, it was still advisable to not drink and drive. “Please keep yourself and others alive,” concluded Steyn.
The identity of the two doctors is known to Newcastillian News, but their identities are currently being withheld as their families will now be notified. Newcastillian News extends its heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the deceased.
