According to ANC Josiah Gumede Regional spokesperson Bheki Khanyile, the disturbing incident took place on 12 November 2023.

He explained that the councillor allegedly attacked the community member, Mvelo Mokhonza, with a bush knife and a stick equipped with a steel nut.
Khanyile further explained the severity of the situation, stating, “The victim was rushed to the hospital with broken limbs and a disfigured face.”
Compounding the distressing event, it is reported that the victim’s mother, purportedly in her early nineties, witnessed the attack. “To witness such a horrible incident done to her son by their neighbour might send her to the grave,” stated Khanyile.
Moreover, the ANC Regional spokesperson confirmed that a case had been filed at the Ezakheni Police Station, and legal actions are currently underway.

As further investigations are underway, SAPS Spokesperson Warrant Officer Basheer Khan confirmed that Cllr Mdluli had since been released on bail and will appear in court on 4 December 2023.

Newcastillian News approached Alfred Duma Municipality’s Mayor, Cllr Zama Sibisi, for comment. However, he highlighted that he was not in a position to comment as the matter had not been reported to him at the time and he was unaware of the incident.
As the accused councillor is affiliated with the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), Newcastillian News sought a comment from IFP KZN Provincial Chairperson Thami Ntuli, but he was not available for comment at the time of publication.
