Severe thunderstorms expected across Newcastle and neighbouring towns

Newcastle and neighbouring towns have been urged to prepare for severe thunderstorms set to hit the region on Wednesday afternoon, 11 October 2023.

Despite the pleasant weather experienced earlier in the day, the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a stern warning, forecasting severe thunderstorms in several towns across the region. The identified areas at risk include:

  • Newcastle
  • Dannhauser
  • Ladysmith
  • Vryheid
  • Dundee
  • Estcourt
  • Utrecht
  • Nkandla
  • Nqutu
  • Pomeroy
  • Mooi River
  • Paulpietersburg
  • Underberg

Moreover, SAWS highlighted the potential for localised damage to infrastructure, settlements, and livestock during the course of these anticipated severe thunderstorms. The weather service further cautioned against the risk of falling trees blocking minor roads and the possibility of localised injuries resulting from flying debris.
