A year long mystery shrouds the identity of a woman, believed to be around 25 years old, whose lifeless body was discovered in the uMzinyathi River on 23 October 2022.
Despite the passage of time, no one has come forward to claim the body, leaving local authorities perplexed and seeking the community’s assistance.
The Osizweni South African Police Service (SAPS) has issued an urgent appeal to Newcastle, Madadeni, and Osizweni residents to aid in the identification of the deceased woman. The lack of any familial claims or information has prompted this outreach.
Lizzy Arumugam, the spokesperson for Newcastle SAPS, provided a brief description of the unidentified individual. She noted that the deceased is of light complexion and has short afro hair. Furthermore, Arumugam revealed that a murder case had been opened by Osizweni SAPS in October 2022 in connection with the incident. Despite the ongoing investigation, no family members or relatives have stepped forward to claim the body and provide the necessary closure.
In light of this, Arumugam stressed the urgency of the situation, stating, “The Osizweni Police precinct appeals to all members of the community who may have lost a family member under similar circumstances to come forward and help identify the deceased. It is vital that the deceased be identified so that she can be laid to rest with dignity.”
Community members willing to assist in this critical matter can contact Detective Sergeant MV Khoza from Osizweni SAPS Detective Services. Detective Khoza can be reached at 063 777 4436 or 034 477 8013.
