Criticism often surrounds the efforts of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in tackling criminal activities. However, a recent incident involving two police officers from the Amajuba District SAPS, stationed in Newcastle, has showcased their effectiveness.
This follows two officers arresting eight suspects associated with truck hijacking and robbery cases in the Newcastle vicinity.
The event unfolded on Tuesday, 22 August 2023 at around 10 am, while the two officers were conducting a patrol along the N11 route.
Lizzy Arumugam, the spokesperson for the Newcastle SAPS, explained that during their routine patrol, the officers pulled over a vehicle occupied by eight individuals. Upon closer examination, it became evident that these men were connected to a string of criminal activities. Consequently, the officers instructed the suspects to disembark from their vehicle.
Yet, with the odds stacked against them due to the outnumbering suspects, the officers faced a dilemma – how should they navigate the situation?
“As there were several suspects and only two police officers, the officers could not search them until backup arrived. The suspects were then asked to lie down until backup arrived,” told Arumugam.
However, although the suspects initially complied and lay on the ground, they repeatedly attempted to rise to their feet, disregarding the officers’ instructions. In light of the circumstances, Arumugam stated, “Necessary force was used to subdue the suspects for the officers’ safety.”
During this incident, a passerby pulled over and captured a video of the officers ensuring the suspects complied with their instructions. This video was subsequently shared on social media, triggering a degree of outcry regarding potential police misconduct.
While the actions of the officers will undergo scrutiny, thus far, their responses seem justified. Arumugam emphasised, “The suspects were arrested for truck jacking and they were also wanted for two robberies and another attempted truck hijacking.”
Concerning the robberies, an official police source outlined that the men targeted both motorists and pedestrians. Arumugam added, “Further investigations into the men will now be conducted.”
As the SAPS delves deeper into the alleged criminal involvements of the eight men, the courageous conduct of the two officers cannot be overlooked. They managed to ensure that the suspects were prevented from evading justice and continuing their unlawful actions.
