The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has raised concerns, issuing a warning regarding veld fire conditions in multiple areas of KwaZulu-Natal. Communities across the region are now being advised to exercise heightened caution amidst the increased risk of fire related incidents.

The areas encompassed by this warning include:

The implications of these veld fire conditions are substantial, according to SAWS. Reduced visibility, potential damage to property and vegetation, water and air pollution, and the unfortunate loss of both human and animal life are all plausible outcomes. As communities brace themselves for these conditions, safety remains paramount.

As part of this cautionary message, Road Angels Traffic Information issued its own advisory regarding two specific areas. A significant veld fire along the N11 and a massive veld fire heading to Charlestown from Vrede were both creating the potential for poor visibility on the roads.

In alignment with the concerns raised by SAWS, a reminder is extended to the public to act responsibly in the face of these conditions.

The weather service emphasised the importance of refraining from discarding bottles in fields, as they can magnify the sun’s rays and inadvertently spark fires. Moreover, SAWS strongly advocated for the proactive creation and maintenance of controlled fire breaks.

SAWS further reiterated the significance of prompt action in the event of a large fire, stating, “In the case of a large fire, report it immediately and move away from the area to allow professionals to deal with it.”

In situations where water resources are limited, SAWS suggests the use of sand as an alternative method for fire control. These guidelines are instrumental in mitigating risks and promoting community safety.
