The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Level 2 warning for disruptive snow which is valid until Friday, 21 July 2023. The affected areas include Newcastle, Dannhauser, Ladysmith, Underberg, Greater Kokstad, Impendle, Estcourt, Giants Castle, Mooi River, Bergville, uMngeni, and Umzimkhulu Local Municipality.

In addition to this, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (KZN CoGTA) emphasised that the weather conditions could lead to icy roads, potentially causing traffic disruptions and isolated loss of vulnerable livestock and crops.
In response to the impending weather, KZN CoGTA proactively activated all disaster management teams in the mentioned municipalities, ensuring they are ready to respond if needed.
Furthermore, KZN CoGTA issued an advisory to motorists, urging them to exercise caution while travelling and, if possible, consider avoiding travel altogether due to potentially slippery roads.
The department also appealed to residents with livestock, encouraging them to ensure the protection of their animals or relocate them to safer areas. “We encourage everyone to stay informed about weather updates and to take all necessary precautions during this period of snowfall in the Midlands area,” added KZN CoGTA.
