The wheels of justice have started turning as 23 year old Siyanda Mfundo Mahlambi is sentenced to life imprisonment for murder and an additional 15 years for aggravated robbery by the Pietermaritzburg High Court.
Sergeant Sibusiso Kunene of the Amajuba District Task Team explained that the horrific crime unfolded on 6 February 2023 after Mahlambi and his accomplice met at a tuckshop in Dannhuaser, with Mahlambi telling his accomplice that he needed some money.
The two then hatched a plan to pose as passengers and rob a meter taxi driver of his vehicle and sell it.
According to Sergeant Kunene, Mahlambi and his accomplice spotted their victim at a shopping centre and requested a ride to Madadeni. The unsuspecting taxi driver agreed to their request, setting in motion a tragic chain of events.
During the journey to Madadeni, Mahlambi’s accomplice asked the taxi driver to pull over under the pretence of needing to urinate. Seizing the opportunity, Mahlambi proceeded to strangle the driver with a shoelace. Despite the driver’s valiant struggle, he was overpowered and tragically killed.
“The suspects then placed the driver’s body in the boot of the vehicle before disposing of it in a river near Ballengeich,” explained Sergeant Kunene.
After discarding the victim’s body, the assailants returned to the Dannhauser area to pick up another accomplice who would assist in finding a buyer for the stolen car.
However, their plan unravelled when they entered Dundee and caught the attention of a vigilant police officer who pulled them over. Upon pulling the vehicle over, the officer noticed blood in the vehicle.
This led to their immediate arrest, with Mahlambi confessing to his involvement in the crime and pleading guilty. Sergeant Kunene confirmed that the trial for the other two suspects is still ongoing.
As the wheels of justice turn, bringing a semblance of closure to the grieving family of the taxi driver, it is essential to reflect on the gravity of this heinous crime.
