In a relentless pursuit to combat crime and ensure the safety of its community, the Newcastle South African Police Service (SAPS) has ramped up its efforts.
A recent high-density operation, held on Thursday, 29 June 2023, witnessed Newcastle police joining forces with officers from the Amajuba District.
Lizzy Arumugam, the spokesperson for Newcastle SAPS, emphasised the significant police visibility achieved during the high density operation in Newcastle, Madadeni, and Osizweni.
Furthermore, Arumugam underscored the implementation of a roadblock to prevent any criminal elements from infiltrating Newcastle via motor vehicles.
During the visibility operation, which involved officers patrolling the community of Newcastle, Arumugam confirmed that eight individuals were apprehended for various criminal offenses.
The arrests included three individuals charged with assault, one person taken into custody for malicious damage to property, two individuals arrested for reckless driving, one person apprehended for drunk driving, and one individual arrested for armed robbery.
Moreover, the roadblock near the entrance of Newcastle showcased the presence of the police force in a tangible manner.
Arumugam revealed that, along with issuing numerous fines for roadside infractions, the police conducted thorough searches of 144 vehicles and 303 individuals.
These searches yielded significant results, as one 9 mm pistol, approximately 13 mandrax tablets, and nine knives were confiscated by the police.
Arumugam highlighted that this operation aligned with Acting Station Commander Colonel Radebe’s strategy of conducting high density operations at least four times a week.
Furthermore, Newcastillian News reported a notable decline in contact crimes such as attempted murder, murder, and assault. Colonel Radebe attributed this positive outcome to the heightened police visibility in Newcastle.
